The Delancey British Alpine Championships started with nearly half a metre of snow falling in Tignes on the day before racing which led to a 24 hours postponement. Thankfully the week that followed was almost perfect for racing with clear blue days and sub-zero overnight temperatures.
2017 is my first National Championship at FIS level with a full week of racing including Super-G, Downhill, GS and Slalom.
Competing amongst top World Cup racers including David Poisson, Johan Clarey, Adrien Theaux and Dave Ryding was great experience but equally challenging as my points meant I was typically starting with a bib in the mid 70’s or 80’s. The Super-G was most challenging with the National Junior Race (NJR) being held on much the same course directly after the Senior Races on snow rapidly deteriorating under a hot Sun.
In U18, my 6th place in the Super-G followed by 5th in the Downhill were two solid results. 11th in the GS was a disappointment on a slow course, balanced by 1st in the U18 Slalom and a chance to stand on the podium. Results in NJR races were frustrated by non-finishes in Super-G, GS and Slalom despite placing in the top three of both GS and Slalom in first runs. My combined results in NC races were strong enough for 3rd overall and a satisfying end to the 2017 season.
